2010 Visual Studies
Workshop Summer Institute
Working With Archives
Matt Walker
July 12-16
This workshop provides the fundamentals for working with photography in
the context of the archive, and the creation of original artwork. Using
the substantial visual resources at the Visual Studies Workshop, or a
preferred personal collection, this workshop examines concepts,
analysis, and current archival/museum best practices in the assembly of
visual information. Exploring the uses of vernacular collections, this
workshop assists students in researching and documenting visual
information, and in crafting new conceptual structures of visual data.
Working With Archives incorporates topical readings, field exercises,
focus on alternative methodology, and hands–on experience with diverse
visual collections. Assemble the foundation of an artists’ book, enhance
your portfolio, acquire material for a montage, video, film, or
website, among other options. This course provides an opportunity to
develop skills that can be widely applied throughout the arts and a
diversity of professional pursuits in the utilization of archived visual
information.
